Training gear for the PT tests
What each test event actually uses, so you can practice with the same thing at home. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases; the Amazon links below are paid links.
For every branch
Body tape measure
Every branch now screens waist-to-height ratio, and a stretched or slipped tape is the easiest way to get a wrong reading at home. Use a non-stretch cloth or fiberglass tape; the self-locking kind makes it easier to measure yourself. Body tapes on Amazon
Plank timer
Every branch scores a plank hold. Any stopwatch works, but an interval timer you can see from the floor saves you from craning your neck. Interval timers on Amazon
GPS running watch
Runs are 1.5 miles (Navy), 2 miles (Army, Air Force) or 3 miles (Marines). A GPS watch shows your pace per mile as you go, which is how you learn to run an even split instead of fading at the end. GPS running watches on Amazon
Army Fitness Test
Hex bar
The AFT deadlift is done with a 60-pound hex (trap) bar, which puts the weight at your sides instead of in front. Training with a straight bar works the same muscles, but the hex bar groove is different. Hex bars on Amazon
Kettlebells
The sprint-drag-carry includes a carry with two 40-pound kettlebells. A pair at that weight also covers farmer's carries for grip. 40 lb kettlebells on Amazon
Drag sled
The drag portion pulls a 90-pound sled down a 25-meter lane and back. A sled with a pull strap and room for plates is the closest home match. Drag sleds on Amazon
Marine Corps PFT and CFT
Pull-up bar
On the PFT, push-ups max out at 70 points while pull-ups can earn 100, so pull-ups are worth training. A doorway or wall-mounted bar lets you train them every day. Pull-up bars on Amazon
30-pound dumbbell
The CFT ammo can lift uses a 30-pound ammo can pressed overhead for two minutes. A 30-pound dumbbell held by one end is the simplest stand-in. 30 lb dumbbells on Amazon
Navy PRT
Rowing machine
The Navy allows a 2,000-meter row in place of the run. If you plan to row, train on the same kind of air rower the fitness centers use, since pace numbers differ between machines. Rowing machines on Amazon
